Simone Biles has withdrawn from the women’s team gymnastics final at the Tokyo Olympics after suffering a “medical issue,” multiple outlets have reported. According to CNN, Biles pulled out of the finals on Tuesday (July 27) after leaving the arena with her trainer.
“Simone Biles has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue,” USA Gymnastics statement said in a statement on Tuesday. “She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions.”
“Thinking of you, Simone!” it added.
TMZ reports that Biles appeared to injure her leg earlier this week after landing her vault attempt and was seen having her right leg wrapped by a trainer.
However, there appear to be conflicting reports about what caused Biles to withdraw. According to an NBC broadcast, a Team USA coach said Biles’ withdrawal from the gymnastics team event is “not injury related” and is instead due to a “mental issue she is having.”
In an Instagram post shared on Monday (July 26), the 24-year-old gymnastics star opened up about the immense pressure she feels while competing.
“It wasn’t an easy day or my best but I got through it,” she wrote ahead of the finals. “I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times. I know I brush it off and make it seem like pressure doesn’t affect me but damn sometimes it’s hard hahaha! The Olympics is no joke! BUT I’m happy my family was able to be with me virtually. They mean the world to me!”
While Simone has withdrawn from the team’s final competition, there’s still a chance that the 4x gold medalist could compete in the all-around finals this Thursday (July 29). So far, she hasn’t publicly addressed her withdrawal from the event.
