The lineup for this year’s Global Citizen festival is looking as star-studded as ever.
Earlier today (July 13), the organization, one dedicated to ending extreme poverty across the world by 2030, announced that The Weeknd, Doja Cat, Usher, BTS, Lizzo, Burna Boy, DJ Snake, Lorde and more will be taking the stage for the 24-hour event. The event will take place on Sept. 25.
For fans of R&B and hip-hop, the fact that The Weeknd and Doja are performing at this event is welcome news. For his part, Weeknd is still riding a wave of momentum he established when he dropped his After Hours album last year. With a few songs that lived near the top of the Billboard Hot 100 throughout 2020, fans will be happy to see Abel take the stage after the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the Doja Cat end of things, she’s now just a few weeks removed from unloading Planet Her, an album laced with all the dynamic flows and genre-fluid tunes that have helped make her a superstar. Depending on when she performs, she might get to perform her new Weeknd-assisted song “You Right” with him at the event.
The festival is also a chance for artists to help draw attention to and raise money for causes they believe in across the world. This year, their goal is to raise $6 billion for famine relief around the globe. For his part, The Weeknd recognizes it as an opportunity to help Ethiopia, the country his parents migrated from before he was born.
“It is very important to me to be a part of this historic event to spread awareness and encourage action toward helping the people of Ethiopia during this devastating humanitarian crisis they are faced with,” the Weeknd said in a statement. “It’ll be an honor to perform and help bring support to these citizens who are suffering so severely.”
At the moment, performances are slated to take place in North America, Asia, South America, Australia, Africa and Europe. More information regarding tickets and locations for performances will be made available in the near future.
