Following his acceptance of the second-ever Change Maker Award at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) on Sunday night (May 23), Trae Tha Truth took to Instagram to thank everyone who congratulated him on this huge honor.
“I want to take this moment to say thank you to everyone who called, texted, DM or posted a congratulations,” he captioned the post. “It means a lot because I feel I got this for all of us!!! I even want to thank everyone who didn’t feel to acknowledge or say congrats & ain’t say nothing and kept it pushin.. It’s all love… either way, I appreciate my blessings… Love.”
As REVOLT previously reported, the Houston emcee was honored with the Change Maker Award for his philanthropic work and social justice advocacy. His non-profit, The Relief Gang, recently provided relief to those who were in need following the deadly winter storm that took place in Texas and several other states.
Trae also traveled to Minneapolis in April to support the family of George Floyd during Derek Chauvin’s murder trial. Last year, the “Betta Believe It” emcee was one of many people who were arrested for protesting outside the home of Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron while demanding justice for Breonna Taylor after she was killed by local police officers.
On Sunday, Tina Knowles-Lawson presented Trae with the award and he gave an inspirational speech.
“Another day, another blessing,” he said. “I said if I ever had a position, I’d be there for those in need. … I’m one of those who represent the struggle of the less fortunate. And what I will say when it comes to change is it’s important, that’s why this award is so important to me. It’s important to change people’s lives, it’s important to change the thoughts of those who give up at times and it’s important to change things that wasn’t designed for our best interest… It’s time for us to change the narrative and control our own story.”
