DJ Khaled’s star-studded Khaled Khaled album is jam-packed with hits. Per usual, the We The Best Music Group founder arranged an assortment of tracks that should blast through speakers all summer long. Sonically, the album may sound familiar because many of the songs feature popular hip hop samples.

The first song on Khaled Khaled is “THANKFUL.” It includes a sample of JAY-Z’s Blueprint banger “Heart Of The City,” which took from Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City.”

“SORRY NOT SORRY,” the epic JAY-Z and Nas collaboration, also samples another one of Hov’s songs. It includes a sample of “Song Cry,” which borrows from Bobby Glenn’s 1976 song “Sounds Like a Love Song.”

H.E.R. and Migos’ “WE GOING CRAZY” contains a sample from the late Shawty Lo’s hit “Dey Know.” The trap anthem originally took from Mandrill’s 1972 track “Children of the Sun.” Further down the track list, the A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Big Sean, Rick Ross, and Diddy collaborative cut “THIS IS MY YEAR” samples The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Long Kiss Goodnight.” RZA, whose credited with producing Biggie’s song, sampled Al Green’s “The Letter.”

“WHERE YOU COME FROM,” the reggae tune Khaled selected for the album uses part of Bad Boy rapper Shyne’s breakout hit “Bad Boyz.” Reggae fans may also remember the original, Barrington Levy’s “Here I Come (Broader Than Broadway).”

While some samples are difficult to decipher, it’s clear Bryson Tiller, H.E.R. and Meek Mill’s collaboration “I CAN HAVE IT ALL” uses Beanie Sigel’s 2005 single “Feel It In The Air.” Beanie used parts of Raphael Ravenscroft’s 1979 song “Whole Lotta Something Goin’ On.” Even Justin Timberlake’s catchy “JUST BE” includes a sample. Khaled pulled from Ghostface Killah and Mary J. Blige’s “All That I Got Is You,” which took from The Jackson 5’s “Maybe Tomorrow.”

Khaled is a masterful composer. His sample-laden formula has worked well in the past. For example, his 2017 album Grateful was carried by Rihanna and Bryson Tiller’s mega-hit “Wild Thoughts.” The chart-topper sampled Carlos Santana’s “Maria Maria.” Father of Asahd, Khaled’s 2019 offering features samples from Outkast’s “Ms. Jackson,” Jodeci’s “Freek ‘N You” and Drake’s “Nonstop.”

On Snapchat, Khaled announced he’s already shot nine music videos for the album. Following the Hype Williams’ visual for “SORRY NOT SORRY,” Khaled plans to release another one — Buju Banton, Bounty Killer and Capleton’s music video for “WHERE YOU COME FROM” comes out Saturday (May 1).
