Two Capitol Police officers are injured and a driver has been shot after a person rammed their vehicle into a barricade outside of the U.S. Capitol on Friday (April 2). Associated Press reports that at least one of the officers is in serious condition and the driver is in critical condition.

The car crash and a shooting occurred at a security checkpoint near the Capitol building while Congress was in recess. The area was put on lockdown due to the security threat and Capitol Police said one suspect was in custody on Twitter.

“USCP is responding to the North Barricade vehicle access point along Independence Avenue for reports someone rammed a vehicle into two USCP officers,” the police department tweeted. “A suspect is in custody. Both officers are injured. All three have been transported to the hospital.”

Police later corrected the location and said the incident occurred near Constitution Avenue. People inside the Capitol building were told to stay indoors and keep away from windows as police assess the threat. Washington, D.C. police also announced several road closures as they respond to the situation.

“Maryland Av, NE and Constitution Av, NE west bound towards the Capitol is currently closed,” the department tweeted.

According to CNN, the FBI in Washington, DC is also responding to the threat. Video from the incident showed a dark sedan crashed into a vehicle barrier.

Ambulances and a helicopter were also seen in the area and one person was seen being carried away in a stretcher, CNN reports.

Associated Press writes that the crash occurred about 100 yards away from the entrance to the Senate side of the Capitol building. Barricades preventing cars in the area were recently removed as the Capitol begins to open back up again after the Jan. 6 riot.
