This weekend, the Recording Academy unveiled the roster of artists scheduled to take the stage at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Da Baby and Roddy Ricch were among the list of performers, but it looks like Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak also want to be involved.
On Sunday (March 7), following the Grammys update, the members of the newly-formed duo Silk Sonic, reacted to the news via a lengthy exchange on Twitter.
“YO @BrunoMars WHAT THE FUCK?!? Did you see this?!?! Call me back!!” .Paak tweeted alongside a photo of the list of performing artists. Mars answered, “Wait… are you sure this is even real? where did you find this?”
After .Paak clarified that the post was shared by CBS — the channel in which the Grammy Awards are set to air — Mars questioned, “Are you sure these are performers and not just presenters?”
“FAM STOP!!! Did they even hear the song?!? They don’t love us??” .Paak asked, to which the “Finesse” singer replied with an updated roster, tweeting they were “all good.” Then, .Paak realized their group was omitted from that list as well.
“Do we need to get a hashtag going or something??” the Ventura star wrote. Mars responded, “Andy just chill. I’m still waking up,” but .Paak refused to let up and asked fans to join him in demanding a Silk Sonic performance at the Grammys. “Nah fuck that! I haven’t seen my family in months!!” he tweeted. “I need this to work, You promised me!! Everybody join in!!! I need all of Twitter to help make this trend!! Come on @RecordingAcad #LetSilkSonicThrive.”
Mars, uncertain of whether .Paak’s approach was the right way to secure a gig at the Grammys, tweeted, “I’m rocking wit you,” and later shared his official request to the Recording Academy.
“If you can see it in your hearts to allow two out of work musicians to perform at your show, we would really appreciate it. We just released a song and could really use the promotion right now,” the “Grenade” singer penned in a letter. “We have a lot riding on this record…We haven’t been able to perform for a while, and we just want to sing. We’ll send in an audition tape and take as many COVID[-19] tests as we need to. I promise we won’t be extra. We just really want a gig again. I hope you’ll consider this request and give us the opportunity to shine. Love, Silk Sonic.”
#LetSilkSonicThrive became a trending topic, but Silk Sonic has yet to hear from the Recording Academy.
“I got excited we were trending for a while today. I’m sorry I let you down,” Mars told .Paak, and the “Bubblin” crooner responded, “You never let me down champ! Only disappointed me. But shit at least it’s top trending! Don’t give up hope!”
