The impeachment trial for Former President Donald Trump kicked off to a very interesting start. On Tuesday (Feb. 9), Bruce Castor Jr., one of Tump’s impeachment lawyers, rambled during his presentation and people found it difficult to follow what he was trying to say. He also stated that President Joe Biden won the election because the American people were “smart enough” to vote in a new administration — a statement which undermined the defense’s previous arguments justifying Trump’s Jan. 6 speech about the election being rigged.

“The reason I’m having trouble with the argument is that the American people just spoke, and they just changed administrations. So, in the light most favorable to my colleagues on the other side of the aisle here, their system works,” Castor said.

“The people are smart enough, in the light most favorable to them, they’re smart enough to pick a new administration if they don’t like the old one, and they just did,” the lawyer added.

Several people pointed out how Trump’s legal team came to the impeachment trial unprepared and how they did a terrible job representing him. Twitter user @JRehling tweeted, “I don’t know how law school works, but you should be better than Trump’s lawyers by the end of the first day.”

“Trump’s lawyers were terrible, but Republican senators also need to reflect on the quality of the case they had. Trump is guilty and he couldn’t get a decent lawyer to represent him,” tweeted @chuck_chalupka.

Senator Bill Cassidy was in total disbelief seeing how Trump’s legal team handled the trial on Tuesday. “President Trump’s team was disorganized,” he said. “They did everything they could but to talk about the question at hand, and when they talked about it, they kind of glided over it, almost as if they were embarrassed of their arguments.”

CNN anchor Jake Tapper called out David Schoen, Trump’s other lawyer, for saying that the impeachment trial was to incapacitate the people who voted for Trump. “Trump lawyer David Schoen says the impeachment is an effort to ‘disenfranchise’ the 74 million who voted for Trump,” he tweeted. “Which is an interesting accusation given the two months of attempts by Trump & Co. to *literally* disenfranchise voters in states Biden win.”
