Alberto “Alpo” Martinez tossed what appeared to be bags of heroin out of his truck just moments after he was shot five times, police said on Monday (Nov. 1). The news arrives as authorities continue their investigation into the former Harlem drug kingpin’s drive-by shooting death.

According to The New York Post, police found about a dozen baggies of what appeared to be heroin on the street where Martinez was driving his 2017 Dodge Ram. Authorities believe the Martinez began “throwing them out the window” while fleeing the scene of the shooting, fearing police might be pursuing him.

As reported by REVOLT, Martinez was fatally shot by an unidentified person in a moving vehicle around 3:20 a.m. EST on Sunday morning (Oct. 31).

After the shooting, it’s believed he drove a few blocks before crashing into another vehicle. The 55-year-old was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Harlem Hospital and reportedly suffered gunshot wounds to his chest, chin and left arm.

The New York Police Department’s homicide investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Authorities have yet to announce any suspects behind the incident, but Martinez was a well-known and controversial figure in the Harlem community.

The New York native ran a drug empire during the 80s and 90s, expanding from Harlem to Washington, D.C.; and admitted to killing his childhood friend Rich Porter for allegedly stealing drug profits. After his arrest in 1991, Martinez confessed to 14 murders and, to avoid a life prison sentence, turned government witness.

Martinez was released from a federal prison in 2015 and had been living in Lewiston, Maine under a new identity, Abraham Rodriguez, that was provided to him by the witness protection program. It’s unclear why he returned to Harlem or if he was still a part of the witness protection program at the time of his death.
