Lawmakers are calling for the City of Memphis to go under a curfew on Wednesday night (Nov. 17) following the tragic shooting death of Young Dolph.

As REVOLT previously reported, on Wednesday, the “Preach” rapper was fatally shot while purchasing cookies in Memphis. Now, several elected officials are calling for the city to go under a curfew to “preserve the safety of all citizens.” In a letter to the city, Councilman JB Smiley wrote that he is “grieving,” but “tired of issuing statements that speak to or highlight crime in our communities.”

“…I ask that you exercise care and caution in the days to come,” he wrote. “Make smart decisions and be safe. I’m hopeful that the City of Memphis will implement a curfew to preserve the safety of all citizens.”

Tennessee Rep. London Lamar also called for a curfew, tweeting, “I’m making the suggestion to @CityOfMemphis @MEM_Council to implement a citywide curfew tonight!!”

As REVOLT previously reported, Dolph was shot and killed while purchasing cookies at Makeda’s Butter Cookies in Memphis. According to the bakery’s owner, a car drove up to the storefront, and someone began firing their gun. So far, no information about the gunman has been released to the public.

Following news of Dolph’s passing, several celebrities took to Twitter to send their sympathies to the “RNB” rapper, including Megan Thee Stallion, who previously collaborated with him. “I am sooo sick rn I am in disbelief!” she tweeted. “Praying for his family and friends! Rest In Peace to my friend a true legend dolph.”

On Wednesday, Jim Strickland, the mayor of Memphis, sent his condolences to Dolph’s family and friends. He also called for the city to remain “calm” to allow the Memphis Police Department “to do their duty to capture those responsible.”
