In roughly two months, it will be one year since Timbaland and Swizz Beatz launched their musical education platform, Verzuz. After hosting over 20 celebratory battles during the pandemic, the mega-producers recently sat down and revealed their top matchup of 2020.
During an appearance on “The Carlos Watson Show,” Tim and Swizz were asked to name their favorite Verzuz battle thus far. “The best?” Timbaland asked while he thought. “I would say Beenie Man gave the best performance.” The Ruff Ryders beatmaker agreed with his friend/business partner, but the video clip cuts off before either producer gets an opportunity to support their answer with an explanation.
The Verzuz creators kicked off their popular competition series in March, showcasing their extensive discography in a battle that lasted over three hours. Throughout the rest of the year, they entertained fans quarantining at home with showdowns between Jagged Edge and 112, Teddy Riley and Babyface, and Erykah Badu and Jill Scott — all of which were done at the comfort of everyone’s home. Though quality and technology gradually improved, the series took a turn for the better when Beenie Man and Bounty Killa — dancehall artists who have long mastered the format of a track-for-track battle — performed for fans in the same room.
The in-person competitions continued for the remainder of the year, but after Ashanti’s COVID-19 diagnosis pushed back her battle against Keyshia Cole, Tim and Swizz decided to return to the virtual format.
“As COVID-19 numbers continue to increase, safety is a top priority for us,” read a statement from the Verzuz organizers. “As much as we enjoy having everyone together in the same room, to protect the artists and everyone who works with us in putting the shows together, we’ll be going back to separate locations for a bit.”
