The hip hop community is rallying together to seek justice for Ahmaud Arbery, the unarmed black man who was fatally shot while jogging through a Georgia neighborhood.
On February 23, Arbery jogged past Gregory McMichael, who then told his son Travis to get their guns. McMichael, a former police officer, and his son took their weapons and jumped into their truck to follow Arbery. He claims that he told Arbery to “stop” so that he could talk to him. Soon after, there was a struggle over the firearm and Arbery was shot and killed.
According to the police report, McMichael argued that Arbery looked like a suspect from a string of robberies that recently took place in the area. A prosecutor argued that McMichael and his son acted within Georgia’s citizen’s arrest statute. Travis, who held the shotgun, is believed to have acted in self-defense.
Yesterday (May 5), the video footage of the horrific shooting was released and a lot of people are outraged that both killers have not been arrested or charged with the killing. A district attorney said that the case will go to a grand jury to decide whether or not to bring charges to the father and son.
LL Cool J took to Twitter to show his support for Arbery by posting the number and email of the Liberty County District Attorney to demand that McMichael and his son be charged for the murder.
Maino took to Instagram to share a photo of Arbery. He captioned the post, “Honestly they NEED a Different type of Justice. That other shit Don’t Work! Smh.”
Lecrae tweeted, “God be with the family of #AhmaudArbery.”
Protesters are now marching to the home of the McMichael’s and outside of the Georgia Capitol. Check out more reactions from members of the hip hop community below.
