YNW Melly has reportedly tested positive for the novel Coronavirus. According to a post from his official Instagram account on Thursday (April 2), the rapper, who is currently being held in a Broward County, Florida jail as he awaits trial, plans to request conditional release in wake of the diagnosis.

“Melly has tested positive for COVID-19 today while awaiting his trial in Broward County Jail,” the post from his team reads. “He’ll be filing a motion for restricted release in hopes of better care due to any jails not being prepared to treat this new virus. He hopes for your support and to recover soon #prayformelly send positive energy to him please.”

Additionally, Melly’s lawyer Bradford Cohen confirmed on Thursday night (April 2) that the rapper has been diagnosed with the disease.

“Yes he has tested positive for COVID-19,” Cohen wrote in an email to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “I am currently representing him for the emergency motion for his conditional release.”

“The jails and prisons in this country are creating an extremely dangerous situation by not providing hand sanitizer and proper hygiene care,” Cohen continued. “I have prepared and will be filing an emergency motion in the morning for his conditional release.”

Meek Mill, JAY-Z and their REFORM Alliance have recently brought more attention to the health crisis that the current pandemic poses to inmates and prison staff. On Friday (April 3), the organization announced its partnership with New York Times best-selling author Shaka Senghor to donate 95,000 protective masks to prison facilities around the country.

“We’re in danger of seeing prisons coast-to-coast turn into morgues,” REFORM CEO Van Jones said in a statement. “It is important to get medical supplies in, and it is equally important to get more human beings out. REFORM Alliance is working on both.”

According to a report by South Florida’s WLRN radio station, two inmates at Melly’s Broward County Jail had tested positive for the virus as of Thursday (April 2). Melly has been in custody at the jail since being arrested last February on two charges of first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
