South By Southwest (SXSW) will follow their strict no refund policy after the festival was canceled due to coronavirus concerns.
The no refund policy is detailed on their website as follows: “Any and all payments made to SXSW are not refundable for any reason, including, without limitation, failure to use Credentials due to illness, acts of God, travel-related problems, acts of terrorism, loss of employment and/or duplicate purchases.”
On Monday (Mar. 5), SXSW laid off a third of its employees following the cancellation. SXSW released a statement saying, “SXSW has been rigorously reviewing our operations, and we are in the unimaginable position of reducing our workforce. We are planning for the future and this was a necessary, but heartbreaking, step.”
In a press conference on Friday (Mar. 6), Mayor Mayor Steve Adler declared a local disaster because of the coronavirus.
“The city of Austin has cancelled the March dates for SXSW and SXSW EDU. SXSW will faithfully follow the City’s directions,” SXSW posted to Twitter following the announcement.
The tweet continued, “We are devastated to share this news with you. ‘The show must go on’ is in our DNA, and this is the first time in 34 years that the March event will not take place. We are now working through the ramifications of this unprecedented situation. As recently as Wednesday, Austin Public Health stated that ‘there’s no evidence that closing SXSW or any other gathering will make the community safer.’ However, this situation evolved rapidly, and honor and respect the City of Austin’s decision. We are committed to do our part to help protect our staff, attendees and fellow Austinites.”
SXSW will allow all badge-holders “to defer their registration to 2021, 2022 or 2023.” Festival organizers say that are also exploring options to provide a virtual SXSW online experience very soon.
The Coachella festival is reportedly being postponed until October due to concerns surrounding the spread of coronavirus. The festival will move to the weekends of Oct. 9 and Oct. 16 and the same lineup is expected to perform at those later dates.
