The 2020 All-Star Game is quickly approaching and the league has many tributes planned for Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna Bryant. One of the tributes will be that Team Giannis will wear No. 24 on their jerseys to honor Kobe while Team LeBron will wear the No. 2 jerseys to pay homage to Gianna.
James revealed why he chose to pay homage to Gianna during the game by wearing the No. 2. Los Angeles Times reporter Tania Ganguli tweeted, “LeBron said the league asked him if he wanted his team to wear 24 or 2 for the All Star game. He picked 2, the number Gianna Bryant wore. Why? ‘Zhuri.’”
Zhuri is James’ only daughter and youngest child. Unfortunately, Gianna died along with Bryant on the helicopter flight, which probably makes James think about how important it is for him to be a “girl dad” to Zhuri.
James and Bryant were close friends. After Bryant tragically passed, James took it really hard. He wrote a heartfelt message about Bryant on Instagram.
“I’m heartbroken and devastated my brother!! Man I love you big bro. My heart goes to Vanessa and the kids. I promise you I’ll continue your legacy man!” James wrote. “You mean so much to us all here especially #LakerNation and it’s my responsibility to put this shit on my back and keep it going!! Please give me the strength from the heavens above and watch over me! I got US here! There’s so much more I want to say but just can’t right now because I can’t get through it! Until we meet again my brother!!”
James also got a black mamba tattoo in remembrance of Bryant. The tattoo features a black mamba snake with the numbers 24 and 8 on each side of it. Under the snake is the phrase “Mamba 4 Life.”
The All-Star game takes place on Feb. 16 in Chicago, Illinois.
