Pop Smoke has posthumously earned his first solo entry on the Billboard Hot 100 with his track, “Dior.” The song debuted at No. 49 on the chart, becoming his first solo song to enter the chart and marks his highest-charting song.
Pop had previously debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 with his Travis Scott-collaborated track “GATTI” from last year’s JACKBOYS compilation, which went on to peak at No. 69. “Dior” first appeared on his 2019 debut mixtape Meet The Woo and was added as a bonus track on Meet The Woo 2. Pop had released the latter just weeks before he passed away.
“Dior” isn’t the only song of Pop’s that has seen a boost in listening. According to Nielsen Music, the Brooklyn rapper’s catalogue experienced a 392 percent increase in streaming on the day of his death. Furthermore, his music received 24.7 million on-demand streams in the US, with “Dior” alone racking up 5.2 million streams. Meet the Woo track “Better Have Your Gun” saw the largest increase in streaming, with a 202,000 bump.
Pop was fatally shot last week (Feb. 19) during a home invasion at his house in Hollywood, which police now believe was a targeted attack. Authorities have described the four suspects as men wearing hoodies and masks, and security footage showed one of them breaking into his house from a back entrance. However, no arrests have been made in the ongoing case.
At only 20 years old, Pop and his music are greatly missed. Tributes overflowed social media from hip hop’s elite, fans, his record label and more.
“We are devastated by the unexpected and tragic loss of [Pop Smoke],” Republic Records had stated the day of his passing. “Our prayers and thoughts go out to his family, friends and fans, as we mourn this loss together.”
The major increase in Pop’s digital streaming demonstrates how large his impact was and shows that his legacy will live on.
