On Wednesday (Nov. 18), DJ Luke Nasty took to Twitter to share a snippet of his new recording for “Rain,” but fans on social media were surprised to hear Kirk Franklin’s “Melodies From Heaven” being sampled on the track.

“I have to chill lmao #SAMPLEKING,” the “OTW” emcee tweeted, along with the a clip of the song. Many fans questioned whether or not the gospel legend cleared the track. The single garnered mixed reviews from fans on Twitter — some people loved the track and others thought it wasn’t a good idea to use a gospel song to accompany an image of a half-naked woman holding an umbrella as dollar bills fell down on her.

Twitter user @BlackRoseMint tweeted, “I know this man ain’t just sample an iconic song by Kirk Franklin for some booty music.”

“DJ Luke Nasty is usually a genius selector of sampling classic hits,” tweeted @THEPERFOURMER. “But, sampling Kirk Franklin’s ‘Melodies From Heaven’ with Shawty on the cover, dollas fallin from the sky, umbrella & all?!?!”

Social media user @askformik tweeted, “Don’t put it past Kirk Franklin to approve that sample, y’all. Like…we’re talking about Kirk Franklin. Not Donnie McClurkin. Kirk. Franklin.”

“Too much going on in 2020 to be playing with our good Lord and sampling Kirk Franklin… especially ‘Melodies From Heaven’… that’s a top tier Christian song,” wrote @EboneyIsFit.

“With all the old school joint Kirk Franklin sampled, it was bound to happen one day,” tweeted @gimme1Mo. “Kudos to him for being a trendsetter. I can’t say I can think of anyone who’s sampled a hook on a non gospel song.”
