Since Chadwick Boseman succumbed to colon cancer in late August, his friends and colleagues mourned his loss with heartfelt tributes and recollections of their fondest memories of the Black Panther star. Not much had been heard from his family who asked for fans to “respect their privacy,” but recently his siblings broke their silence, detailing some of their precious moments with the acclaimed actor.

His eldest brother Derrick Boseman recalled his final conversation with Chadwick. “Man, I’m in the fourth quarter, and I need you to get me out of the game,” he remembered his brother telling him. At that moment, he realized Chadwick was “tired” and “ready to go,” so he adjusted his prayer accordingly. “When he told me that, I changed my prayer from ‘God heal him, God save him,’ to ‘God, let your will be done,’” Derrick told The New York Times. “And the next day, he passed away.”

Chadwick’s other brother Kevin Boseman flashed back to the days when the Marvel actor was working hard to make his way into Hollywood despite their parents’ doubts. “A lot of people think making it means becoming an A-list movie star,” Kevin said. “I didn’t force that. I just knew that if Chad wanted to work in the arts, he would find a way and take care of himself.”

When Chadwick was successful in making his dreams come true, Kevin said he always made it a point to “treat him like my brother” and noted he will continue to remember Chadwick as his sibling.

As someone gains fame and notoriety, he explained, “You have to start sharing that person with the world. I always endeavored to just treat him like my brother.”

“I have been trying to remember Chad and not Chadwick,” Kevin continued. “And there’s just been a lot of Chadwick in the air.”
