Trey Songz is the latest artist to say that he will not participate in a Verzuz battle.
In a virtual interview with Ashlee on Air, the “Neighbors Know My Name” singer said that he was not open to being in a Verzuz battle, but he loves what the series stands for. “I don’t see myself…I got a problem with — and I love Verzuz don’t get me wrong,” he said. “I love everything that Verzuz stands for. I love that we have legendary people coming up and showing each other love. And what you see after these battles, a lot of younger people are actually put on to these classic artists and you see their streams go up, etc.”
The Virginia native, who recently released his eighth studio album, also named a few people who he does not want to see in a Verzuz matchup.
“I never really been into being in competition with the next man, next woman and putting myself in a position where I gotta say, ‘This is better than what you’ve done,’” Trey continued. “I’m in competition with myself. And furthermore, I don’t think it’s nobody that really do what I do. It’s a few people I don’t wanna see in a battle. I don’t wanna see Chris Brown in no battle, I don’t wanna see Usher in no battle. I feel like people [who] have solidified a space for themselves — like without question — should not be battling nobody.”
He also offered a suggestion to the Verzuz creators to be able to get everyone to participate.
“If they really wanna get everybody to do a Verzuz, they should be just appreciation joints just for certain artists — where you get one artists up there and they play 20 of their bangers and you just rock with that,” he said.
