According to a statement issued to E News, Lena Waithe and her wife Alana Mayo have broken up after two months of marriage. The couple first shared news of their engagement in 2017.
“After careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways,” a joint statement from their representatives read. “We have nothing but support for one another and ask that you respect our privacy during this time.”
Back in November, Waithe revealed to Ellen DeGeneres and John Legend on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” that she and Mayo had secretly tied the knot at a San Francisco courthouse.
”We didn’t make any announcements or a big [deal]… We went to San Francisco. We went to the courthouse,” the Queen & Slim screenwriter said. “Got married right in front of [late gay rights activist] Harvey Milk’s bust.”
“[It was Alana’s] idea, as all good things are,” Waithe continued. “And she was just driving and she saw the courthouse and she said, ‘We should get married there.’ And I said, ‘Cool, I’m down.’”
Later on, Waithe called married life “interesting” during an interview with US Magazine.
“Now it’s like, I think we’re just doing the best we can, trying to figure it out. Nobody has all the answers, you know what I’m saying?” she told the outlet. “I think as you get older and you mature, you try and figure things out. But yeah, it’s like one of those life things that you do, and you hope you get it right.”
A report published by Love B Scott on Wednesday (Jan. 22), claims that the couple ended their relationship due to Waithe’s ongoing infidelity. A source reportedly disclosed to the outlet that before and after their marriage, Waithe was “still buying designer gifts—Chanel, Gucci—for other women.”
Neither Waithe nor Mayo have confirmed nor denied the cheating rumors.
