The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 2020 Golden Globe Awards on Monday (Dec. 9). While “Catch 22,” “Chernobyl,” “Fosse/Verdon,” “The Loudest Voice” and “Unbelievable” all received nods in the best television / miniseries / movie category, one prominent series was missing: “When They See Us.”

The Ava DuVernay-directed and co-written show’s lack of Golden Globes recognition comes as a shock to many, as the Netflix miniseries was a dominating player at this year’s Emmy Awards.

“When They See Us” received a total of 16 nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards and Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, ultimately taking home awards for Outstanding Casting and Outstanding Lead Actor, awarded to Jharrel Jerome. The series, which tells the true story of five African American young men wrongly convicted of the rape and assault of a jogger, landed the most Emmy nominations of any Netflix show this year.

The Golden Globes shun is even more prevalent with the surprising nod toward Hulu’s “Catch-22,” which only received two nominations at this year’s Emmy Awards.

“[Golden Globes] are y’all ok??” one Twitter user wrote. “The HFPA just wholly snubbed ‘When They See Us’ — not even giving its Emmy-winning actor a nomination. I am confusion.”

“How has When They See Us been snubbed so hard by the Golden Globes?” another person wrote. “Every single person I’ve seen talk about it was blown away by that series. Make it make sense, pleaseeeee?!”

Besides a record amount of Emmy nominations, “When They See Us” also recently received the most television nominations in the upcoming Critics’ Choice Awards. The nominations include Best Limited Series, Jharrel Jerome for Best Actor, Asante Blackk and John Leguizamo for Best Supporting Actor and Marsha Stephanie Blake and Niecy Nash for Best Supporting Actress.

Ricky Gervais will host the 77th Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 5 from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
