Lil Nas X’s debut studio album Montero will open at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart, following Drake’s Certified Lover Boy that is still holding the top spot.
In its opening week, Montero had the equivalent of 126K sales, including 147 million streams, landing at second place. Drake’s latest offering Certified Lover Boy eclipsed Nas X by about 40K units, selling nearly 170K in its third week.
However, Lil Nas X still couldn’t be more grateful for the position he is in, and thanked his fans via Twitter for helping him reach No. 2. “[I] just wanna say thank u again to every single person who gave my album a listen. So many people said I wouldn’t have a career after 2019 and now I have one of the biggest albums of the year. I love u guys and I do not take u for granted,” he wrote.
Coming in at 15 records, Lil Nas X called on some of his industry friends to assist with the success of the album: Jack Harlow, Doja Cat, Elton John, Megan Thee Stallion and Miley Cyrus. However, there were a few names he was determined to get, but couldn’t. To promote Montero, Lil Nas X stopped by The Breakfast Club for an interview on the Thursday before the album dropped. During the chat, the 22-year-old star revealed he reached out to legendary Nicki Minaj and Drake, but the Queen didn’t reply and Drizzy said he was too busy locking in working on CLB.
Lil Nas X has a lot to celebrate as Montero has already racked up awards, accolades, and praise for his body of work. At this year’s recent MTV VMAs, he won the Video of the Year Award for his “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” music video. The headline-dominating visual also nabbed him awards for Best Direction and Best Visual Effects.
