First, some huge news for longtime Mac Miller fans — following some teasing earlier this year, it has officially been announced that his eleventh mixtape, Faces, will be landing on streaming platforms October 15. The project was initially released back in 2014, complete with 24 tracks and additional contributions from Earl Sweatshirt, ScHoolboy Q, Sir Michael Rocks, Rick Ross, Mike Jones, Vince Staples, and more. Faces is also notable for its unique, oft-gloomy production, much of which was handled by Miller via his Larry Fisherman appellation.
In addition to the big reveal, the masses can also check out a new video for the Faces standout “Colors and Shapes,” which sees additional backing from Thundercat. The song is essentially a journey through an LSD trip, complete with an opening intro from psychologist Timothy Leary and lyrics detailing Miller’s otherworldly experiences:
“If it was colors and shapes, the imaginary, ‘stead of all of this weight that we have to carry, would you be able to breathe? And if you could just find where that comfort resides, no distraction or movement that fucks wit’ your mind, would you let them see?”
The video for “Colors and Shapes” brings the late talent’s subject matter to life, beginning with Miller’s dog Ralphie transitioning from a deep sleeper to what looks like an excursion through different dimensions — something that director Sam Mason explained in more detail via statement:
“To build it out I asked Malcolm’s family to send me bits and pieces from his childhood … In the abstract, it’s meant to be a video about childhood—growing up as an artist and the highs and lows of that experience. It’s sort of a look at the emotional and difficult and perilous but noble path of an artist.”
