Over the weekend, J. Cole made headlines when he finally unleashed his highly anticipated new album The Off-Season, and now he’s wasting no time delivering the visuals. First up was “a m a r i,” then “a p p l y i n g . p r e s s u r e,” and now the freshly released “p u n c h i n’ . t h e . c l o c k” video. In the new Scott Lazer-directed video, J. Cole returns to his old stomping grounds of NYC and takes a ride through the city a the signature yellow taxi cab as he delivers his bars:
Back on top, punchin’ the clock, clutchin’ sanity, I got more cribs than Habitat for Humanity/ Shit profound, we propagating more profanity, Paid off collections from recollections of calamity (Oh shit, look, that n***a gonna shoot)
The shit pop off, I learned to duck under the canopy (Oh shit, run, n***a, run)/ ’Til it cool off, they murked a n***a right in front of me
The video comes at the heels of Cole’s sixth studio album, The Off-Season, debuting at the #1 position on the Billboard Album 200 charts. Selling over 228,000 album units, all songs from the album entered in the Top 40 of the Hot 100 while four of the 12 tracks — “m y . l i f e,” “a m a r i,” “p r i d e . t h e . d e v i l,” and “9 5 . s o u t h” — charted in the Top 10 list simultaneously. J.Cole joins Juicewrld, Lil Wayne and Drake as the only artists in history to do so. The project broke his no features streak he had going for his solo projects as we saw assists from 21 Savage, fellow Carolinian Morray, Lil Baby, 6lack, and Dreamville teammate and frequent collaborator Bas.
