This past January saw the release of Yo Gotti’s 10th studio LP Untrapped, which included 15 new tracks from the Memphis hip hop veteran and additional features from A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Baby, Lil Uzi Vert, Megan Thee Stallion, Moneybagg Yo, and more. That album also signaled the end of his contractual obligations with Epic Records, putting Yo Gotti back on the independent circuit.
This week, he delivers the hard-hitting “Recession Proof,” his first drop as a free agent. Produced by Tay Keith, the Collective Music Group head honcho reminds the listeners that he’s unstoppable when it comes to attaining wealth:
“N***a I can count better than the CPA, made a business out of sellin’ that yay, seein’ n***as spend they money ‘fore the n***as got paid, I’m thinkin’ like ‘These n***as crazy’/
Like me tryna keep up with Jay and ‘em, financially, n***as better know they lanes, now I’m up, I’m a multi-millionnaire, that shit just ain’t the same/
Never get offended, I’m motivated, havin’ money, I appreciate it, school of hard knocks, I graduated, school of hard rocks, I participated…/”
He explained the meaning behind the song via social media:
“Recession-proof: is that one is likely to be able to survive even during hard economic times. Through demand & Hustle, thereby increasing the chances that one who has the skills will be likely to survive…”
In addition to Untrapped, Yo Gotti released four other projects while under the Epic umbrella — 2013’s I Am, 2016’s The Art of Hustle and White Friday (CM9), and 2017’s I Still Am. Currently, he’s putting the final touches on Cocaine Muzik 10, continuing what might be one of the more extensive and iconic series in hip hop right now.
