As the protests continue, so does the output of socially charged music by many within the hip hop community. Today, Pharoahe Monch, Styles P, and producer Marco Polo team up for the hard-hitting new single “Same S***, Different Toilet,” which sees the collaborators taking aim at the race and policing issues our communities have been fighting against over the past week (or 400 years, however you view it):

“They’re burning crucifixes on my lawn again, They wanna hang a n***er like an ornament/

It’s tormenting, mourning over yesterday still yawning inside of a tournament I can’t win, ‘Good Morning!’/

Shot gun blast passed by my head, ‘I’m a man I tell you, I’m a man,’ I said, push my daughter and my wife in the closet and slid my son up under the bed/

Filled the Smith & Wesson with lead, looked in the mirror and said ‘Breathe! Now c’mon, breathe!’ I’m bout to bring 6 klansmen to their knees…/”

Pharoahe also took to social media to express his feelings on the police hostilities that’s been taking place, revealing his own fatigue after participating in protests of the past:

“Just participating in a protest is emotionally draining. Although solidarity is spiritually invigorating. Can you imagine it being your life’s work? Leading with love and peace, and non violence. #MLK to be Assassinated… I attended protest for Eric Garner. Thousands of people from all walks of life. It’s not good energy. It’s necessary, But it’s ugly vibrations. This is not good energy. I’m telling you we should be more evolved. This is sci fi alternate demensional (sp) f*** s***!”

Previously, Pharoahe and Styles collaborated on “The Life,” which appeared on Styles P’s 2002 album A Gangster And A Gentleman. Hopefully, the state of affairs will force more collaborative releases from the two hip hop legends.
