Currently, the world is preparing for the release of Headie One’s forthcoming debut album EDNA, which was preceded by the hard-hitting singles “Rose Gold,” “Only You Freestyle” with Drake, and “Ain’t It Different” with AJ Tracey and Stormzy. This week, he adds to that with another cut titled “Breathing,” which sees production from Lasse Qvist and Benjamin Lasnier and keeps with the reflective, vivid raps that Headie One is becoming more known for:
“I’m tryna right my wrongs, the life so short, sometimes I’m feelin’ like this life is long, shorty convinced that I don’t like my home, she say it smell like my cologne, still clear a thirty in my city, catch a flight, I’m gone/
Sharing’s caring but some things I want is mine alone, because when the feds came, I done that time alone, give them a glimpse of my thoughts, they said it’s ‘hopeful thinking,’ thoughts turn to things, now they know what I was thinkin’…/”
EDNA will follow the April EP release GANG, a collaborative effort with Fred again.. that saw eight cuts and features from Sampha, Jamie xx, and FKA twigs. Prior to that, he dropped both Music x Road (his first under the Relentless umbrella) and the RV-assisted Drillers x Trappers II. Music x Road featured assists from Skepta, Dave, Stefflon Don, NAV, Krept & Konan, and more, and scored a top 5 spot for Headie One on the UK Albums chart during its first week of release.
Last week, Headie One also returned to Charlie Sloth’s “Fire In The Booth” series, switching things up by freestyling from a private jet. If anything, it’s a clear sign that the Tottenham rising star has come a long way from his days of incarceration.
Press play on “Breathing” and the aforementioned “Fire In The Booth” freestyle below. EDNA is set to be released this Friday (October 9).
