Earlier this year, Ella Mai returned with her newest single “Not Another Love Song,” a first taste of her upcoming sophomore project. The visual for the track has finally arrived, and is directed by Lesean Harris, who previously led Usher and Ella’s “Don’t Waste My Time” video. The song is a contrast from her well-known breakout hit “Boo’d Up,” and on the new track she sings aboutthe fear of falling in too deep:
“I’m finna take my time, my mind, my rules. This ain’t no crimе, makin’ love to you, though you ain’t say this, but I had a hard time waitin’ for you, boy. You got me where you want, just gotta say and it’s on. It’s like, ooh, boy, do you know you got me like where do you go and you ignore though. I wanna do this again. I’m goin’ down ‘cause I know that it’s you I see in my dreams.”
Recently, Ella Mai gifted fans live renditions of her new single during Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty Show Vol. 2 and on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Her last full length project was her self-titled debut album back in 2018, which included features from R&B heavyweights like Chris Brown, John Legend, and H.E.R.
In an interview from earlier this year, spoke about the chances she was able to take while recording her sophomore album that she wasn’t able to take on her debut project:
“I think these sessions that I’ve been doing for the sophomore album are a lot more figured out. When I was recording the debut, I was a lot younger, and I was trying to figure out what I wanted to sound like, figure out what I wanted to say — and as much as I love my debut album, I was in a very much different space career-wise and as a person. I was 21, 22. I’m 25 now. Going into this sophomore album, I’m a lot more confident I think as an artist. I know what I want to say and what I want to sound like.”
