The Fugees have canceled their upcoming reunion tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of their 1996 album The Score.
On Friday (Jan. 21), the group took to Instagram to announce the news. “We anticipate and understand disappointment but our anniversary tour will not be able to happen,” Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel wrote in a statement. “The continued Covid pandemic has made touring conditions difficult, and we want to make sure we keep our fans and ourselves healthy and safe. An idea sparked to honor and celebrate this 25th anniversary of The Score but we see now it may not currently be our time for revisiting this past work. We’re grateful for the special night we did get to share with some of you in New York, with that rare live moment. If opportunity, public safety, and scheduling allow, we hope to be able to revisit this again sometime soon. Thank you for all of your love and support throughout the years.”
The tour would have been the Fugees’ first in 25 years. It was announced back in September and shortly after, the group held a concert at Pier 17 in New York. The 12-city trek was originally supposed to begin on Nov. 2, 2021 at the United Center in Chicago, before making stops in Oakland, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami, Newark and Washington, D.C. The international leg was scheduled to kick off in Paris the first week of December and conclude in Ghana midway through the month.
However, REVOLT readers may recall that the tour was postponed — three days before the expedition was slated to start — to maximize attendance. The group also promised to add more shows.
Fans took to the Fugees‘ Instagram comments to express their disappointment with the cancellation. One person wrote that they were “sooooo upset” because this was their “dream concert.”
