Ye’s Yeezy Gap line has announced a new partnership for 2022. On Friday (Jan. 7), Gap shared in a press release that its Yeezy-branded division will be partnering with luxury fashion house Balenciaga on a new collection dubbed Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga.
The exclusive collaboration pairs Ye, once again, with Balenciaga’s creative director Demna Gvasalia. “It is a vision come true to work with Gap and Demna to make incredible product available to everyone at all times,” Ye told Vogue.
The “Praise God” rapper previously enlisted Demna to design the stage sets and merch for his Donda listening events in Atlanta and Chicago. They also teamed up in April 2021 to create a $200 tribute T-shirt for DMX that was released the day of the rapper’s memorial service.
“There’s a certain urban minimalism and poetry in our aesthetics, [and] also a desire to push boundaries,” Demna told Vogue. “There are very few people that I know, especially of Ye’s caliber, who really understand my work so well. He makes me come out of my comfort zone and be a better designer. There’s no ego when we collaborate, just a mutual drive to evolve and do something great and new.”
Ye modeled some of the monochrome garbs at his Chicago Donda listening event, and he’s been seen wearing various items from the collection in recent months. Last week, he splurged at Balenciaga’s Miami boutique, and was pictured walking out with several shopping bags.
As REVOLT previously reported, Gap announced its 10-year deal with Ye for the Yeezy Gap brand in June 2020. The first co-branded piece, a $200 puffer jacket, sold out instantly online when it released last fall.
CNN reported that Gap CEO Sonia Syngal said in the company’s most recent call that the most popular item has been the Yeezy Gap Hoodie, which delivered the most sales of a single item in one day in Gap.com history.
“With over 70% of the Yeezy Gap customers shopping with us for the first time, this partnership is unlocking the power of a new audience for Gap, Gen Z plus Gen X men from diverse background,” Sygnal said.
The first Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga release is expected to come out in June 2022. A second drop is slated to hit shelves later in the year.
