Nas is clarifying who the title of his eighth studio album Hip Hop Is Dead was directed at.

During a recent episode of his Spotify podcast “The Bridge: 50 Years of Hip-Hop,” Jeezy, who appeared as a special guest on the show, told the Illmatic rapper how he thought the 2006 LP was aimed at southern emcees.

“When he did Hip Hop [Is] Dead, I thought he was talking about us,” Jeezy said. “I wanted to be the front guy and say what I said. At the time, you gotta think, I’m just getting on. I’m just seeing my first legitimate money. I’m just getting my shows going. And then you got the Don in New York saying, ‘Hip hop is dead!'”

However, that wasn’t the case and Nas said that he should’ve been clearer about who his album’s title was aimed at. “I didn’t think about that part. I didn’t think that certain people would think I’m talking about them,” Nas said. “Oh nah, I’m talking about mainly New York! Mainly New York. I’m talking to everybody, but I didn’t explain it thorough enough.”

After Jeezy initially reacted to the title of the LP, the two men talked on the phone and cleared up their problems.

Nas is currently gearing up to release his newest album Magic on Friday (Dec. 24). The nine-track LP sees production from Hit-Boy and features DJ Premier and a vocal assist A$AP Rocky. “MAGIC is in the air,” the New York native captioned an Instagram post announcing the project. “Midnight ET brand new music to vibe to.”

Hit-Boy and Nas have been on a hell of a run since their 2020 album King’s Disease went on to win Best Rap Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, becoming the Life Is Good rapper’s first-ever Grammy win in his career.
