Donald Glover’s critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning TV series “Atlanta” is finally making its return. On Thursday (Dec. 23), FX Networks announced that the first two episodes of “Atlanta” season 3 will premiere on March 24, 2022 on TV; followed the next day on Hulu. The remaining eight episodes in the season will drop once a week.
“We are thrilled to have ‘Atlanta’ back with a new season on March 24th,” FX Entertainment President Eric Schrier announced in a press release. “Once again, Donald Glover, the producers and stellar cast have delivered another signature season synonymous with the excellence that makes ‘Atlanta’ so great.”
“Atlanta” was renewed for a third season almost four years ago. The last episode of the series’ second season, dubbed “Robbin’ Season,” came out in May of 2018. According to The Hollywood Reporter, FX hoped to debut the show’s third season the following year. However, a series of delays, including Glover’s busy schedule and other issues, led to a delay in writing the season, FX Chief John Landgraf told reporters.
The network also gave “Atlanta” season 4 the green light back in 2019, hoping to film both seasons back-to-back in the spring of 2020. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted that plan, with production for the season finally beginning this April.
The third season of “Atlanta” was filmed and takes place almost entirely in Europe. It follows Earn, played by Glover; Alfred, a.k.a. “Paper Boi” (Brian Tyree Henry); Darius (Lakeith Stanfield) and Van (Zazie Beetz) in the middle of a successful European tour. The Reporter writes that the characters work to “navigate their new surroundings as outsiders and struggle to adjust to the newfound success they had aspired to.”
Season 4, which has not been given a timetable yet, will bring the cast and crew back to Atlanta.
