Fans are pitting Lil Wayne and JAY-Z against each other after the Reasonable Doubt crafter said no one can share the stage with him in a Verzuz battle.
Hov made the claim during a Tuesday night (Dec. 21) Twitter Spaces conversation with Alicia Keys and music executive Rob Markman. While discussing Keys’ new double album, her husband Swizz Beatz’s co-founded battle series came up in conversation.
“I ain’t gonna lie. No disrespect, everyone’s amazing. They’ve done what they’ve done. No one can stand on that stage with me,” JAY-Z said after Markman asked who he would consider going up against. “It’s not a chance in hell that anyone can stand on that stage with me for, I don’t know how long [a battle] is, one hour? Two hours?”
“You got to stand in front of the ‘Grammy Family Freestyle’ live? No one has ever even seen me perform that, you got to stand in front of that?” he continued. “That ain’t never going to happen.”
While many of Hov’s fans have claimed the same thing, Tuesday’s Twitter Spaces was the first time the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer said it himself.
However, hip hop fans on Twitter were quickly up to the challenge, naming rappers who they believe have the discography to take on JAY. Lil Wayne frequently came up in conversation, causing him to trend on the social media app Wednesday morning (Dec. 22).
“Y’all realize how long Lil Wayne[‘s] music catalog is with hits? Like sit back and actually think about it,” one fan tweeted. “Do you really think JAY-Z has enough hits for Lil Wayne? If you’re thinking correctly, it’s not even close. JAY-Z gon get left behind after the first wave of songs. He can’t last.”
“I used to think Drake or Kanye [West] could stand with JAY, but Jadakiss changed the dynamic,” another person remarked, referring to The LOX and Dipset’s August battle. “You gotta have more than just hits. You need cuts that went platinum on the street. I don’t think they got it like that. Wayne can go into that bag, too.”
