L.A. Reid‘s proposition for a Verzuz battle has prompted a debate on Twitter.
Last week, the record executive visited “The Real,” where he talked to Loni Love, Adrienne Bailon and Garcelle Beauvais about a multitude of topics, including his desired Verzuz competition.
“It’s Mariah Carey versus Beyoncé! Bring that on,” Reid said, continuing on with his explanation. “The hits they have, the legacies they have. Bey is the queen, right? Sometimes Mariah might be slightly underrated for how long her career has lasted, how many hits she has, and she practically owns Christmas.”
In the days following the interview, Reid’s comments made their way around the internet, sparking yet another debate about a hypothetical Verzuz matchup. Music fans joined in on the conversation and provided their reasons for backing either Carey or Beyoncé.
“Mariah Carey’s career started 13 years before Beyoncé,” wrote Twitter user @chesterjonesjnr, an obvious fan of the “Fantasy” singer. “They are not in the same league. Mariah Carey #1s are unmatched. Please go remind yourself who Mariah is. She owns a whole season every single year since 1994.”
Mariah fan @_romeko insisted that no other singer could take Carey on in a battle.
“Now LA, under what sun can Beyoncé battle THEE Mariah Carey? Bey got hits but Mariah’s got THE hits,” he wrote. “She had hits before Bey got a record deal. If this was stage performance then Bey would have Mariah down but a hits match up? Mariah’s only competition is herself.”
Beyoncé supporter @JessicaNesShay1 said that the matchup would be a great one but argued that Queen Bey would be victorious in the battle.
“Mariah Carey & Beyoncé doing a Verzuz would be great!” she tweeted. “Mariah would be one of the only ones that could hang in there with Bey but your sick if you think Beyoncé not winning! She’s timeless.”
“Y’all children really outchea disrespecting Mariah Carey,” added @djdommb. “Of course Beyoncé is winning. But she’s definitely not getting Mariah outta here easily.”
