The family and friends of Off-White’s Virgil Abloh gathered to celebrate his life and legacy at his homegoing service. On Monday (Dec. 7), the likes of Kanye West, Rihanna, Frank Ocean and Drake showed up at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Illinois to pay their last respects to the late designer.
Lauryn Hill performed an emotional rendition of her 1998 hit “Everything Is Everything” at the ceremony, and Tyler, The Creator choked up as he attempted to eulogize his late friend. He praised Abloh for inspiring people “of all colors, ages, backgrounds and religions.” “That’s what he did, he brought the illest people together,” the rapper said in tears. “He was so real, ’cause he didn’t have to do that.”
In another tear-jerking speech, Abloh’s sister stood before the crowd, highlighting some of the fashion icon’s best qualities.
“My brother was endearing and humble, yet daring and courageous,” she said. “His charisma and aura resonated love and kindness to all. He pursued his passions and remained diligent until the very end. He was inspired by his confidence and imagination because Virgil did not believe in the word impossible. As Virgil once said in his last show, ‘There is no limit. Life is short, you can’t waste even a day subscribing to what people think you should do.’”
Abloh passed away on Nov. 28 from a rare form of cancer called cardiac angiosarcoma. He’s since been honored with tributes on social media, at a Miami show debuting his final Louis Vuitton collection and most recently, with the designation of his very own day in Rockford, Illinois, his hometown. As REVOLT previously reported, “Virgil Abloh Day” — a day intended to commemorate his accomplishments and the example he set for youth in his community — will be celebrated annually on Dec. 1.
