Mariah Carey is in celebration mode after learning “All I Want For Christmas Is You” hit a billion streams. On Sunday (Dec. 5), the singer took to social media to revel in the success of the holiday song, which is officially certified diamond.
“I’m freaking out!!!! 1 billion!!!” she wrote. “These numbers are incredible, but the love I have for the #lambily is unquantifiable. Eternally grateful and blessed.”
“All I Want For Christmas Is You” was released on Carey’s 1994 Merry Christmas album but took a while before it reached its current level of popularity.
“When it first came out, it was more of a gradual thing,” the Grammy-award-winning singer previously told “Entertainment Tonight.” “It was popular, but it didn’t have what it has now. I feel like people have grown up with the song and it’s become a part of people’s lives in terms of the way they celebrate the holidays. That makes me feel really proud as someone that loves Christmas so much.”
Now, more than 25 years later, the single is breaking records as the first-ever holiday song to earn diamond status. “The continued love for my song never ceases to amaze me and fill my heart with a multitude of emotions,” Carey added in a statement. “It blows my mind that ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ has endured different eras of the music industry. The RIAA DIAMOND award?! Wowww! I’m so fortunate to have the greatest fans on Earth, my Lambily, who continue to support my legacy. I love you.”
Days before Christmas, Carey’s holiday song is also making appearances on music lists. It is currently placed at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is the No. 6 song on U.S. iTunes.
