R&B songstress Mýa is the star of the new Lifetime original movie My Favorite Christmas Melody. The “Best of Me” singer isn’t new to acting. She’s appeared in films such as Chicago, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, Cursed, Bottleworld, and 5th Ward, among others. However, in her latest role the Grammy award-winning artist is doing something she’s never done before: performing Christmas music.
“I was very excited about it, especially being that it was Christmas oriented because that was new for me,” Mýa told theGrio. “I’ve actually never done a Christmas album or released any Christmas singles, so that was a big attraction.”
In My Favorite Christmas Melody, Mýa plays Abby, an up-and-coming singer/songwriter who rediscovers her voice, regains her confidence and decides to go after her dreams again after she gets her song stolen from her.
While working as an uninspired commercial jingle writer, Mýa’s character gets the support and uplift she needs from her mom, and Travis, a high school teacher at her mom’s school. Mýa told theGrio she felt “very comfortable” portraying Abby and relating to the “holiday full circle theme of going back home, finding your footing and being more connected to your family and friends … then also rekindling your spirit and love for your gift of music.”
Mýa adds that her character Abby is “very uncomfortable” working with Travis at first, but “you walk in faith and hope for the best and put your best foot forward,” she told the outlet. “There was a little bit of hesitancy on her side because of what she had just been through.”
Fans hoping to hear even more new music from Mýa can rejoice. The 42-year-old Maryland native said she’s putting out a new project with Grammy-nominated production duo Louis York. The first single “Space and Time” was released last year. “[I’m] so excited to share that with the world because it’s my best work ever, ever,” Mýa said.
