Earlier this month, drill fans rejoiced when LD, a prominent member of the South London collective 67, took to social media to confirm that he was released from prison. A true artist of the genre, the masked rapper wasted little time upon his release — last week, he liberated his new single “First Day Out,” a Show N Prove and Young Chencs-produced effort that sees him reaffirming his position as legend in the game:
“It’s been two years and a bit and they still couldn’t touch my throne, see red came home, more bank rolls and poles, and leng ones giving us dome, I was 15 in school with a wap, two years later—dome, broken niggas from broken homes, don’t talk about rides ‘cause I went on loads, trust me…”
Courtesy of Alia Hassan Studios, Tyrus, and Gugzay, the accompanying clip for “First Day Out” begins with LD’s initial moments post-incarceration, from a phone call with his mother to his embracing his loved ones. Things quickly move to the music, with the rapper back on the block and at other locations with his crew, making things clear that he’s only getting started.
“First Day Out” follows LD’s February release Who’s Watching, which contained 11 tracks with additional features from K-Trap, Rue Melo, S Loud, and AJ. That in turn followed 2018’s The Masked One, which boasted collaborations alongside Dizzee Rascal, Tiggs Da Author, Young Adz, Dimzy, Belly Squad, and more.
In an interview with Dazed, LD revealed how, despite his focus on his music career, old issues (and the unfortunate cloud over drill as a whole) continues to be a hindrance for him:
“The sad thing is I did leave the roads … But, like they say, your past follows you. Which is basically what [Who’s Watching’s] about. I thought, ‘Yeah cool, I’ve left this life, I can go and chill,’ not knowing I was being watched.”
