Malikah Shabazz, a daughter of civil rights activist Malcolm X, has died.

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), Shabazz was found unconscious and unresponsive by her daughter at her Brooklyn home on Monday (Nov. 22). At this time, authorities believe her death was due to natural causes.

Dr. Bernice King, daughter of the late Martin Luther King Jr., took to Twitter to offer her condolences. “I’m deeply saddened by the death of #MalikahShabazz. My heart goes out to her family, the descendants of Dr. Betty Shabazz and Malcolm X. Dr. Shabazz was pregnant with Malikah and her twin sister, Malaak, when Brother Malcolm was assassinated. Be at peace, Malikah,” she wrote.

Shabazz’s death comes less than a week after her father’s convicted killers were exonerated. As REVOLT previously reported, on Nov. 18, the convictions of Muhammad A. Aziz and Khalil Islam were thrown out after an investigation revealed that evidence was previously withheld by the FBI and NYPD.

After the civil rights leader was assassinated on Feb. 21, 1965, the police arrested Aziz, Islam and a third man — Nation of Islam member Talmadge Hayer. The three men were later convicted of murder and sentenced to life behind bars. Throughout the years, Aziz and Islam maintained their innocence and Hayer, who confessed to the murder, also stated that they were not involved.

In 1987, Islam was released from prison, but sadly passed away in 2009. Aziz was paroled in 1985 and Hayer was later freed in 2010.

Last week, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. blamed law enforcement for failing the men and their families by arresting them on questionable evidence. “This points to the truth that law enforcement over history has often failed to live up to its responsibilities,” he said. “These men did not get the justice that they deserved.”
