Big Freedia faced backlash on Wednesday (Oct. 27) after giving her take on Boosie Badazz’s current controversy with Lil Nas X. Boosie previously used a homophobic slur while referring to Lil Nas and suggested he commit suicide, but Freedia told TMZ she doesn’t believe the “Wipe Me Down” rapper is homophobic.
“I don’t think Boosie is homophobic, I think he just has a problem with Lil Nas,” she told the outlet. “… He was upset. You know, when people get upset they’ll say whatever’s on their mind and on their heart.”
The New Orleans bounce legend further claimed Boosie “definitely has respect for the gay community” because his new documentary My Struggle featured gay characters.
“Boosie’s new movie My Struggle has lots of gay folks in there,” she said. “He has a whole scene in jail where he has a lot of gay guys from Louisiana representing.”
On Twitter, many of Freedia’s fans were disappointed by her response.
“I like Big Freedia a lot but she is wrong here,” one person wrote. “Let’s suppose Boosie did just have a problem with ONLY Lil Nas X. Nothing he said was okay even in that case. So this is a weak take.”
“Caitlyn Jenner defending Dave Chappelle and Big Freedia defending Boosie was NOT on my 2021 Bingo card,” another person wrote.
Others brought up Boosie’s past comments about Dwyane Wade’s transgender daughter Zaya.
“I’m really wrestling with this Big Freedia defending Boosie like it was really just Lil Nas X when he did the same thing to Zaya Wade,” one Twitter user wrote.
As reported by REVOLT, Boosie’s tweets about Lil Nas X caused the 22-year-old’s father to get involved earlier this week. The exchange started over the weekend when Lil Nas joked that he and Boosie were recording a new song together.
Boosie got wind of the joke and posted several tweets about Lil Nas that were later removed from the platform.
“U a whole bitch playing with a gangsta SMH U can keep sucking dick n getting fucked n your ass n peace,” he wrote in one. “N #uhateyourself I would too if I was you LOL.”
On Tuesday (Oct. 26), Lil Nas’ dad took to Instagram to defend his son.
“How the hell you’re a gangsta rapper promoting drugs, gun violence, degrading women and getting high every video talking about you’re for the kids. Man, sit your old man looking ass down,” he wrote, seemingly addressing Boosie. “The game has [passed] you. We real Bankhead over here. Not like the guy who claims it.”
Boosie later responded, tweeting, “DON’T GET MAD AT ME CAUSE YOUR SON CAME OUT LIKE THAT LOL. I KNOW IT HURTS.”
