Lil Nas X has been honored with his own day in Atlanta. Yesterday (Oct. 20), the Atlanta City Council officially declared Oct. 20 as “Lil Nas X Day,” remarking on the 22-year-old hitmaker’s “impact on the LGBTQ community.”
The honor was commemorated with an evening ceremony at Atlanta’s Gathering Spot where mayoral candidate and city councilor Antonio Brown awarded Lil Nas with a proclamation plaque.
“He has made a considerable impact on the LGBTQ community by reshaping how society accepts LGBTQ artists within the music industry and empowering others to break barriers and be more open, expressive and personal through music and art,” Brown said.
“And Lil Nas X, I just wanna say you inspire me,” he continued. “I’m running to be the mayor of Atlanta. I would be the first LGBTQ mayor in the history of the city. And you inspire me, allow me to believe I can do it. So thank you.”
Lil Nas thanked Brown and his fellow Atlanta natives for the honor in an acceptance speech.
“Thank you all for being here. This is incredible,” he said. “I’m not gonna cry. Shout out to Atlanta. I know a lot of you probably didn’t know I’m from Atlanta… I’m from the A. But seriously, this is amazing. I would not imagine I would be here four years ago, when I was at my sister’s house sleeping on the floor… This is incredible.”
It’s been an exciting week for Lil Nas, starting with his song “Industry Baby” reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Montero crafter thanked fans and the song’s collaborators in a post about the feat on Instagram.
“Wow! Here we are, three number 1 songs!” he wrote. “When I was writing ‘Industry Baby’ I hadn’t released any new music in over a year. It became my manifestation song, because I knew that no matter what people thought would happen to me (post 2019), I would have an amazing 2021!”
“Thank you to my brother Jack Harlow who inspires me to this day; thank u to the talented two who never leave my side, David & Denzel of Take A Daytrip; thank u to the goat Ye for even being part of this…” he continued. “.. And thank u to the fans who made ‘Industry Baby’ your song of the summer!”
As reported by REVOLT, the success of “Industry Baby” also gave Kanye West his fifth No. 1 hip hop song as a producer. Watch Lil Nas get awarded with his own day on Twitter below.
