Megan Thee Stallion is the latest celebrity to stand up against Texas’ controversial abortion ban.
On Friday (Oct. 8), the Good News emcee took to Instagram to speak out against the new law and encourage her followers to help out. “Y’all know I’m a Texas girl and we deserve better!” she captioned the post. “Politicians want to cut off abortion access and control our bodies, lives, and futures — I’m speaking up. Take action today and text ACCESS to 22422. #BansOffOurBodies.”
As REVOLT previously reported, SB 8, which Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed back in May, went into effect on Sept. 1. and outlaws doctors from conducting abortions once a fetal heartbeat is discovered, which usually happens around six weeks into a pregnancy.
Additionally, anyone who helps a woman access an abortion after six weeks can be sued by private citizens for $10,000 or more in damages.
President Biden immediately criticized the new legislation and said it “blatantly violates the constitutional right established under Roe v. Wade.” A week later, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Texas in an effort to block its restrictive abortion law. Attorney General Merrick Garland said the measure “is clearly unconstitutional under long-standing Supreme Court precedent.”
However, on Wednesday (Oct. 6), a Texas federal judge ruled to temporarily block the state’s abortion law and sided with the Justice Department’s suit. “From the moment S.B. 8 went into effect, women have been unlawfully prevented from exercising control over their lives in ways that are protected by the Constitution,” U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman wrote in his decision. “That other courts may find a way to avoid this conclusion is theirs to decide; this Court will not sanction one more day of this offensive deprivation of such an important right.”
Texas lawmakers are planning to appeal the judge’s ruling to the 5th U.S. Court of Appeals.
