Syesha Mercado has been reunited with her infant son Amen’Ra over six months after he was taken from her and her partner, Tyron Deener. On Saturday (Oct. 2), the overjoyed parents shared a video of the tiny tot in the backseat of their car as they celebrated his return home. “AMEN’RA IS OFFICIALLY HOME!!!” the “American Idol” finalist wrote in the Instagram post’s caption.
As reported by REVOLT, both Amen’Ra and the couple’s daughter Asset Sba were seized by police over alleged “health concerns” after a visit to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. At the time, Syesha was concerned because her milk supply started to run dry and Amen’Ra wasn’t accepting other fluids.
However, instead of getting medical advice, the couple said they were ejected from the hospital and Amen’Ra was taken by the Florida Department of Children and Families.
“The only thing we’ve done as parents is going to get assistance for our son,” Tyron said at a press conference in August. He claimed they were targeted by authorities, in part, because of their vegan lifestyle. “We’ve been judged on the way we look, the way we present ourselves. We’ve been criminalized. We had our son and daughter removed from us for lack of understanding.”
Amen’Ra was 15 months old when he was separated from his parents and placed in foster care and Asset Sba was just 16 days old. The couple’s fight to regain custody of their children drew media attention in August with high profile civil rights lawyer Ben Crump joining the case. Syesha and Tyron reunited with their daughter in August.
At the time, Tyron celebrated the joyous occasion on social media, saying, “We want to say thank you. Because of y’all… my family has had the proper support to get the best attorneys in the country to be able to bring justice. Asset is back!”
