Coi Leray is ready to release her debut album, but the executives at her record label don’t think it’s time. The star revealed the news following a brief exchange with one of her fans.
On Friday (Oct. 1), a Coi supporter took to Twitter to ask her about the status of her upcoming project. “Any updates on the album,” tweeted the fan, to which the “No More Parties” singer responded, “Na I’m sorry.” She elaborated moments later in subsequent posts.
“Feel like I’m ready for an album, but my label doesn’t think so,” she wrote. “So I’m just going with the flow. I hate the flow.”
Coi was initially slated to drop on Sept. 3, the same day Drake’s Certified Lover Boy was released and days after Kanye West Donda became available on streaming services. At the time, it wasn’t clear why Coi’s project never came out, but she let fans know that she wasn’t the least bit upset.
“Glad my album ain’t drop. Between Drake and Kanye, sheesh,” she wrote. “Everything happens for a reason. This gives me more time to tighten up. Maybe take some notes from the both of them.”
Coi had been dropping mixtapes since 2018, but her blooming career catapulted into the mainstream following the release of her single “No More Parties,” which became her first entry into the Billboard Hot 100. With her newfound fame, she’s been the target of body shaming, but with supportive artists like Lil Durk, she hasn’t quit.
“Almost gave up one day, and he told me don’t ever stop,” Coi wrote along with a picture of her and Durk. “Most artist show love from a distance on some weird shit, but this man right here believed in me, believe[d] in ‘No More Parties’ and been behind me ever since. He know a star when he see one, and I just wanna thank you for all your support. OTF FOREVER.”
