On Wednesday (July 14), Haiti First Lady Martine Moïse shared photos of herself at a hospital, where she’s been recovering since the July 7 assassination of her husband, President Jovenel Moïse. Taking to Twitter with the two photos, Martine mourned the shocking and tragic loss of her husband of 25 years.
In one tweet, roughly translated to English, Martine wrote, “Thank you to everyone who is helping me pray for my return to life… I, Martine Moïse, still do not believe that my husband has gone like this before my eyes without saying a last word to me.”
“This pain will never pass,” she added.
In another tweet showing her bandaged arm, the first lady wrote, “Thank you for the team of guardian angels who helped me through this terrible time. With your gentle touch, kindness and care, I was able to hold on. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”
Earlier this week, the 47-year-old also tweeted a voice recording, in which she said in Haitian Creole, “I am alive, thanks to God. I am alive but I have lost my husband.”
As reported by REVOLT, Haitian police arrested a 63-year-old man named Christian Emmanuel Sanon on Sunday (July 11), who is believed to be the mastermind behind the overnight attack. Authorities say Sanon is a Florida resident, but traveled to Haiti on a private plane back in June. They believe he had political motives to assassinate the president.
Martine was rushed to a hospital after the attack with serious injuries. Her husband was fatally shot a reported 12 times.
“We are shocked and saddened to hear of the horrific assassination of President Jovenel Moïse and the attack on First Lady Martine Moïse of Haiti,” President Joe Biden previously said in a statement. “We condemn this heinous act, and I am sending my sincere wishes for First Lady Moïse’s recovery.”
