Today (July 4), the Obamas are celebrating both Independence Day and the birth of their first daughter, Malia.
The recent Harvard graduate turns 23 today and judging by her parent’s posts on social media, they’re evidently proud of her. Via Twitter, President Obama and the former First Lady each shared throwback pictures of themselves and their daughter Malia.
“Happy Fourth of July, everybody – and also, happy 23rd birthday to our dear Malia!” Mrs. Obama wrote. “It’s been a few years since we took this photo, but I know that she’ll always be my sweet little girl. Malia, we love you, and are so excited to see what this year will bring for you!”
Mr. Obama made sure to wish folks a “Happy Fourth of July” as well and he used the rest of his 140 characters to celebrate Malia. “Happy Birthday, Malia! It’s been such a joy to watch you begin to make your own way in the world with poise, grace, and humor,” he tweeted. “I miss the days when you thought the fireworks were for you.”
Last month, the Obamas celebrated their younger daughter Sasha’s 20th birthday in similar fashion. “Happy birthday to my darling Sasha! I am so grateful for every laugh we’ve shared – and everything you’ve taught me over the years,” Mrs. Obama wrote.
“You’ve grown so much, and it’s been a joy to watch you become the person we always hoped you’d be,” the former president added in his own post. “Your mom and I can’t wait to see where life takes you next.”
In a May interview on “CBS This Morning,” Michelle Obama spoke to Gayle King about both of her daughters growing up before her eyes. “I almost forgot that this year, this summer, they’re going to be 23 and 20,” Obama said. “I mean, I’m just like, ‘Stop there.’ I don’t even have teenagers anymore. So, I am excited for her next chapter. That’s why I want to be as excited as every parent.”
