The Manhattan district attorney’s office is expected to officially bring charges against the Trump Organization for allegedly committing tax-related crimes on Thursday (July 1), The Wall Street Journal reports. Criminal charges are also expected to be levied against the company’s longtime CFO Allen Weisselberg, but not the former president himself.
Prosecutors’ investigation into the Trump Organization and its executives has been going on for three years. Both the Manhattan district attorney’s office and the New York state attorney general’s office previously accused Weisselberg and other Trump Organization employees of illegally evading paying taxes on benefits they received from the company, such as new cars, apartments and private school tuition.
Lawyers told WSJ that more serious charges could be coming if prosecutors can prove that the Trump Organization and its employees systemically avoided paying taxes. Prosecutors also told the outlet that Weisselberg has refused to cooperate with them throughout the investigation. All defendants in the lawsuit are expected to appear in court on Thursday afternoon.
Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s lawyer, is also the focus of a separate ongoing investigation. Earlier this month, the former New York City mayor was temporarily banned from practicing law in the state due to his “false and misleading statements” about the results of the 2020 presidential election.
“We conclude that there is uncontroverted evidence that [the] respondent communicated demonstrably false and misleading statements to courts, lawmakers and the public at large in his capacity as [the] lawyer for former President Donald J. Trump and the Trump campaign in connection with Trump’s failed effort at reelection in 2020,” the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court announced at the time.
Several of Trump’s supporters are also currently facing legal trouble. As reported by REVOLT, a group of President Biden’s former campaign workers sued members of the “Trump Train,” who they say tried to run their campaign bus off the highway last year.
