Young Thug has been cast in a starring role for the upcoming Tiffany Haddish-produced musical dramedy Throw It Back, Complex reports. The Atlanta rap star will also serve as an executive producer for the “dance-filled” musical and curate its soundtrack, which will reportedly consist of southern hip hop classics and HBCU marching band anthems.
According to Deadline, which first broke the news about the musical, Throw It Back is being co-produced by Haddish’s She Read Productions and Paul Feig’s Feigco Entertainment. Us actress Shahadi Wright Joseph will star in the film while Haddish is reportedly taking on a supporting role.
The film synopsis reads: “Throw It Back follows Wytrell, a high school senior who has never stood out from the crowd. After a controversial superstar Miami rapper decides to feature the renowned dance team from her high school in his latest music video, it throws the school into chaos, and Wytrell battles for a spot on the squad and her final chance to be in the spotlight.”
Shadae Lamar Smith will serve as director, marking his feature film debut, and also co-wrote the musical alongside Rochée Jeffrey.
Who Young Thug will be playing in the musical hasn’t been revealed yet, but it will mark his first major movie role. The So Much Fun rapper has composed soundtracks for films and TV series before, such as 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, “Skam” and the Childish Gambino-starring “Atlanta” soundtrack.
Throw It Back is Haddish’s second project to be announced in recent weeks. As reported by REVOLT, the Grammy-winning comedian will also produce and star in a biopic about track and field icon Florence Griffith Joyner, also known as Flo-Jo.
“I am looking forward to telling Flo-Jo’s story the way it should be told,” she previously told Deadline. “My goal with this film is making sure that younger generations know my ‘she-ro’ Flo-Jo, the fastest woman in the world to this day, existed.”
