Regina King, Idris Elba, LaKeith Stanfield, Jonathan Majors and more will star as Western outlaws in the new JAY-Z-produced movie, The Harder They Fall. The first trailer for the upcoming Netflix original was released on Thursday (June 24).
According to a synopsis, The Harder They Fall follows outlaw Nat Love, who’s played by Majors, after he discovers that his enemy Rufus Buck, played by Elba, is being released from prison. Seeking revenge against Rufus, Nat rounds up his crew, which includes his former love Stagecoach Mary, played by Zazie Beetz; the hot-tempered Bill Pickett, played by Edi Gathegi; trigger-happy Jim Beckwourth, played by R.J. Cyler; and “a surprising adversary-turned-ally.”
However, Rufus has “his own fearsome crew,” which includes “Treacherous” Trudy Smith, played by King; and Cherokee Bill, played by Stanfield. The trailer opens with Rufus being rescued from a prison train car by his trusted partners as violence and bloodshed ensue.
The Harder They Fall was directed by Jeymes Samuel, who also co-wrote the film with Boaz Yakin. Along with JAY-Z; James Lassiter, Lawrence Bender and Samuel will produce. The synopsis also promises a “hot soundtrack and a stunning all-star cast,” which also includes Delroy Lindo, Danielle Deadwyler, Damon Wayans Jr., Deon Cole and more.
Twitter users reacted to the trailer online and were particularly excited about King’s inclusion on the cast.
“Me: I really don’t like westerns. Or western-themed stuff. It’s not a particularly interesting setting to me. Regina King: Can I interest you in Black Red Dead Redemption? Me: Hang on, lemme go find all of my money…” one person tweeted.
“Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Regina King, LaKeith Stanfield and Deon Cole in a Black western film? Inject this into my fucking veins,” another wrote.
The Harder They Fall will be released in select theatres and on Netflix this fall. Watch the film’s trailer below.
