A 6-year-old boy was shot in the arm by an angry neighbor, Fox 2 Detroit reports. Coby, who lives in Michigan’s Ypsilanti Township, was retrieving his bike from 29-year-old Ryan Le-Nguyen’s front yard when the man fired a bullet at him.
In an interview with the outlet, Coby said Le-Nguyen initially tried to hit him with a sledgehammer, but he was able to get away. Then, the man grabbed a gun and began shooting at him, the little boy said.
“He tried hitting me with a sledgehammer but that’s not going to work because I’m too fast. [Then he] got a gun and boom — shot me right here,” he explained.
A video of the incident was recorded by a neighboring home’s Ring doorbell camera and showed Coby and his friends riding their bikes on the sidewalk. At some point, the boy got off his bike and left it in front of Le-Nguyen’s house. It was when he went to retrieve it that the man started shooting, his father Arnold Daniel said.
“I’m irate, really,” he told Fox 2. “I can’t function and I don’t know what to do… I’m scared for my family. I’m scared for them because I don’t know what he’s capable of.”
Police say Le-Nguyen shot the gun through his window and the bullet went through Colby’s arm. The little boy was rushed to the hospital and is currently recovering. Le-Nguyen was arrested by the Washtenaw County sheriff and charged with intent to murder. However, he was released on Tuesday (June 8), three days after being arrested, on a $10,000 cash bond.
“I’m trying to figure out he got a bond so low for trying to kill my kid,” Arnold said.
According to Fox 2, the county prosecutor’s office requested a $100,000 bond and was shocked that the amount was set so low. An emergency motion has been filed to raise the bond.
Arnold told the outlet they’ve had issues with the neighbor in the past and that he’s tried to throw away the kids’ bikes before.
“Right now, he’s not even processing what happened,” he said about his son. “He doesn’t realize how close he came to not being here… but I realize it.”
