Over the weekend, J. Cole made headlines when he finally unleashed his highly anticipated new album The Off-Season, and now he’s wasting no time delivering the visuals. First up is “a m a r i,” which is the second cut from the tracklist. In the new video, we see Cole arguably as we’ve never seen him before, as a revitalized sense of confidence oozes through the screen. While various different scenes of setting flash back and forth (including clips of a Dreamville helicopter), Cole goes off on his opening verse:
Plottin’ my escape, this game ride a n***a’s faith, got a couple M’s hidin’ in the safe/ Imagination turned a Honda into Wraith I was doin’ eighty on the interstate/
Tryna make it back before my class started, country n***a never seen a passport/ ’Til I popped off and got a bag for it, now I’m at the Garden sittin’ half court/ Watchin’ Jr. catch it off the backboard/
The project broke his no features streak he had going for his solo projects as we saw assists from 21 Savage, fellow Carolinian Morray, Lil Baby, 6lack, and Dreamville teammate and frequent collaborator Bas.
Ahead of The Off-Season’s release, J. Cole dropped off a documentary detailing the album’s concept and how it came about. As he explained, it’s a reference to his mixtape The Warm Up: “One more time before I leave, before I feel fulfilled in this game, let me try to reach new heights from a skill level standpoint,” he added. Other moments in the documentary see Cole revisiting his old home in Queens, New York City, and him reflecting on how Pharrell inspired him to make music with a schedule in mind.
